The Avery Review, a journal of critical essays on architecture published by the Office of Publications at Columbia University\u2019s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, invites submissions for its eighth annual Essay Prize. The call is open to current students (undergraduate and masters) and recent graduates, whether in schools of architecture or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the mission of the journal, they hope to receive submissions that use the genres of the review and the critical essay to explore the urgent questions animating the field of architecture. They are looking for essays that test and expand the author\u2019s own intellectual commitments\u2014theoretical, architectural, and political\u2014through the work of others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prizes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participating in the Avery Review Essay Prize offers compelling benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Substantial monetary prizes: First place ($4,000) and three second-place winners ($2,000 each);<\/li>\n<li>Publication in the June 2025 issue of The Avery Review;<\/li>\n<li>Academic and professional development opportunity;<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced analytical and writing skills;<\/li>\n<li>Potential networking in architectural circles;<\/li>\n<li>Exposure through a prestigious Columbia University publication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Open to:\n<ul>\n<li>Current undergraduate students<\/li>\n<li>Current masters-level students<\/li>\n<li>Recent graduates (those who graduated after December 1, 2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Applicants can be from any field of study that engages with architecture as a subject, not just architecture programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Submissions for the\u00a0<em>Avery Review<\/em>\u00a0Essay Prize should take the form of critical essays on books, buildings, and other architectural media, broadly defined. They are delighted to receive work that was developed in the context of classes and seminars as well as independent writing.<\/p>\n<p>Their essays are typically 3,000\u20134,500 words in length and have some object of review at their core. They like stylish, concise, accessible, and earnestly felt writing.
