The James McCune Smith Scholarships fund Black UK domiciled students to undertake PhD research at the University in any research area in which they can offer supervision. They provide an enhanced experience through external mentors, placements, leadership training, community-building activities and networking opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The funding covers stipend (estimated at \u00a319,795 for 2025 entry) and fees for up to four years, as well as providing a training grant of \u00a33,000 per year<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll receive:\n<ul>\n<li>a six-month placement with industry, a government or non-governmental organisation or other employer<\/li>\n<li>mentorship from outside academia to provide a broader perspective and network, in addition to the usual academic supervisors<\/li>\n<li>leadership training and community building activities<\/li>\n<li>support for conferences and other networking opportunities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To apply, you\u00a0must be a UK domiciled Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed White and Black Caribbean, Mixed White and Black African, or other mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean or Black Other). Applying does not prevent you from applying for other schemes to obtain a funded place.<\/li>\n<li>Your PhD research can be in any discipline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are 12 James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships available.
