The South African Fulbright Foreign Student Program provides grants for South African university graduates to pursue post-graduate studies at a university in the United States (U.S.) (excludes MBA and medical\/veterinary studies that require clinical contact with patients).<\/p>\n<p>The following opportunities are available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visiting Student Researcher (non-degree): South African PhD students already enrolled with a South African university may apply to conduct one year\u2019s research at a U.S. university as a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR). Current National Research Foundation (NRF) funded PhD students are encouraged to apply.<\/li>\n<li>Master\u2019s or PhD: Post-graduate students may apply for scholarships towards master\u2019s or Doctoral degrees. Scholarships are awarded for two years for one degree \u2013 master\u2019s or PhD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a South African citizen.\u00a0Permanent residents with a minimum of 5 years of permanent residency status in South Africa are also considered.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants who are resident in the U.S. or with dual citizenship from the U.S. are not eligible for the program.<\/li>\n<li>Have one of the following academic degrees:\n<ul>\n<li>Visiting Student Researcher applicants must be registered for a PhD at a South African university for the duration of their Fulbright VSR program<\/li>\n<li>When applying for a master\u2019s degree, you should have obtained a 4-year bachelor\u2019s degree or a BTech degree, or a 3-year bachelor\u2019s degree with an honors degree<\/li>\n<li>When applying for a PhD you must have a master\u2019s degree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Selection Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic excellence<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of leadership potential<\/li>\n<li>Clearly articulated study objectives<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrable interpersonal skills with evidence of cultural sensitivity and a genuine desire to learn more about the United States and share with American citizens aspects of South African culture<\/li>\n<li>Experience and interest in extracurricular and community activities<\/li>\n<li>A desire to further the Fulbright Program and give back to your home country upon returning<\/li>\n<li>Required scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).\u00a0 These scores are required of semi-finalists only.\u00a0 Selected candidates will receive vouchers to register for the GRE and TOEFL tests.<\/li>\n<li>The Selection Committee and the Interview Panel will also be looking for clear reasons for selecting your U.S. university preferences.\u00a0The Fulbright Program expects candidates to conduct a thorough university search and to identify institutions which are a strong fit for their academic, personal and professional goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/apply.iie.org\/apply\/?sr=a37e5d77-21e2-4453-aab6-8d499eb2cffc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here to apply<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/za.usembassy.gov\/fulbright-foreign-student-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South African Fulbright Foreign Student Program<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"[vc_column_text css=\"\"] Deadline: April 8, 2026 Applications are open for the South African Fulbright Foreign Student Program 2027-2028.
