The UNCCD and the International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA) are launching the UNCCD\u00a0COP17 Land and Drought Media Reporting Fellowship\u00a0to support journalists covering one of the defining, yet underreported, stories of our time: the growing pressure on the world\u2019s land and what it means for food and water security, economic stability and global resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Six journalists will be selected to report from\u00a0UNCCD COP17, which will convene in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on 17-28 August, 2026 to advance solutions for restoring land, strengthening drought resilience and safeguarding the ecosystems that sustain livelihoods around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fellowship will cover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Access to UNCCD experts, including pre-COP virtual briefings\u202fto deepen the understanding of the key issues related to COP17<\/li>\n<li>Support for COP17 participation, including a return economy-class travel to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, accommodation during COP17\u202f(21\u201328 August 2026) and COP17 media accreditation<\/li>\n<li>A field visit in Mongolia\u00a0with opportunities to engage with local communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fellowship is open to\u202fprofessional journalists\u00a0(staff or freelance<strong>)<\/strong>\u202fwith a strong track record of reporting on environment, climate, agriculture, development, food systems, business, or related issues.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work with a\u202frecognized media outlet<\/li>\n<li>Be based in\u202fcountries affected by desertification, land degradation and drought<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an interest in reporting on the intersection between environmental change and social and economic dynamics<\/li>\n<li>Applicants should demonstrate a strong command of\u00a0English, enabling them to follow COP17 briefings, events and expert discussions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Selected fellows will represent different regions and languages, including the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).<\/p>\n<p>Selected fellows will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participate\u00a0in\u202fpre-COP virtual briefings\u202fwith experts<\/li>\n<li>Attend\u00a0and\u00a0report\u00a0from\u202fUNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar<\/li>\n<li>Produce\u00a0\u202findependent journalistic coverage\u202fconnected to the themes of the fellowship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All fellows retain\u202ffull editorial independence\u00a0and journalistic integrity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applicants must submit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three samples\u00a0of relevant published work<\/li>\n<li>A\u202fletter from an editor confirming intent to publish COP17-related coverage<\/li>\n<li>A\u202fshort proposal\u00a0outlining three potential stories, including one ahead of COP17<\/li>\n<li>Information about the\u202fmedia outlet\u2019s reach, including audience size and geographic scope<\/li>\n<li>CV or\u00a0resume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Send your application materials to\u00a0<strong>[email\u00a0protected]<\/strong>\u00a0with the subject line \u201cCOP17 Media Fellowship Application\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/news-stories\/stories\/open-call-unccd-cop17-media-reporting-fellowship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNCCD COP17 Media Reporting Fellowship<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"[vc_column_text css=\"\"] Deadline: April 15, 2026 Applications are open for the UNCCD COP17 Media Reporting Fellowship 2026.
