The Max Planck Institute for Political and Social Science in G\u00f6ttingen conducts interdisciplinary research into pressing issues of social and political change, with a particular focus on conflict, inequality, the erosion of democracy and processes of social transformation. At the Institute, the Department of Political Institutions and Conflict is inviting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow in Political Science.<\/p>\n<p>The newly established department \u201cPolitical Institutions and Conflict\u201d (led by Ursula Daxecker) studies the relationship between political institutions and conflict, broadly construed. Research in the department centers on three themes, institutions and political violence, democratic politics in transformation, and the political economy of electoral integrity.\u00a0The department\u2019s empirical focus is on the Global South and combines advanced quantitative methods, such as survey-based and observational causal inference designs, with qualitative approaches, such as fieldwork and interviews. Through this research, the department aims to develop novel insights for important challenges in contemporary society, including the rise of extreme strategies and violence, threats to electoral integrity, and democratic erosion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasks<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct high-quality research within the framework of the department;<\/li>\n<li>Write academic articles with other department members;<\/li>\n<li>Carry out fieldwork and interviews in research locations;<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the recruitment of PhD students and junior researchers;<\/li>\n<li>Co-supervise, support and mentor PhD students and junior researchers working on the project;<\/li>\n<li>Assist with administrative responsibilities related to the project, including the organization of workshops, writing deliverables, data management, and dissemination of project findings in general audience venues;<\/li>\n<li>Be affiliated with and take active part in the research environment at the Department. Regular presence at the Institute is therefore required and researchers need to reside within commuting distance of G\u00f6ttingen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following qualifications are\u00a0<em>essential:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a PhD degree or equivalent in Political Science. The degree (or all qualifications necessary for it) must have been obtained before the employment start date;<\/li>\n<li>excellent publication record (i.e., publications in highly-ranked international journals) or demonstrated potential thereof;<\/li>\n<li>demonstrated interest in the department\u2019s research themes, and willingness to develop additional subject-matter and regional expertise;<\/li>\n<li>excellent command of quantitative research methods, including panel regression, analysis of large administrative data, survey data, and statistical programming in Stata\/R\/etc;<\/li>\n<li>excellent oral and written communication skills in English;<\/li>\n<li>a commitment to academic integrity and transparency;<\/li>\n<li>independent thinking and critical analytical skills;<\/li>\n<li>the ability to work independently as well as collaborate in an interdisciplinary team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following qualifications are\u00a0<em>desirable:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>familiarity with causal inference methods;<\/li>\n<li>expertise in Global South contexts relevant to the department\u2019s regional focus, such as South Asia or West Africa;<\/li>\n<li>excellent oral and written communication skills in languages relevant to the department\u2019s regional focus, such as Hindi or Bengali;<\/li>\n<li>experience collecting, coding, and analyzing event data;<\/li>\n<li>experience conducting fieldwork and qualitative interviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications must be submitted no later than Sunday May 3, 2026.
